Editor’s note: I’m bored of the cliché of the tormented creative person, living and dying a tortured existence alone with nothing but a crystal meth habit for company. Hence, this the first in an occasional series called ‘Creative Couples’ which will profile queer identified couples who are working artists, either individually or collectively. If you’re interested in being profiled, send me an email. PS Artist is however you define it, and even though I am using “Creative Couples” for the sake of alliteration, if you’re in a triad or have any other family configuration (romantic/sexual or NOT), I want to talk to you too!

The 2009 Out Music Award at Webster Hall was well, really interesting. I don’t want to talk smack about Out Music because it is a seriously cool, originally grassroots organization that has been supporting LGBT performers for a while now. But, ahem. Damn.

1.Bear called the crowd “attractive” not once, but twice.
2.The crowd was attractive. As well as cool, but not too cool to be chatty. Bonus!

It’s just a fact: New Yorkers do not get out enough. Oh yeah, they go to parties and clubs and bars and maybe they even go all the way to Manhattan (Brooklyn Queers) or all the way to Brooklyn (Chelsea Gays) if a friend has an autobiographical piece of performance art that they are socially and politically required to attend. But they seem glued to the city in a way that just can’t be healthy. Or let’s say it is somehow super awesome for you to never stray more than 7 miles away from your tiny apartment that you share with six strangers, it still seems, well, kind of boring.

Savin’ the Drama for Your Butch Mama: A Review

Heather MacAllister, founder of the Big Burlesque and the Fat Bottom Revue, used to say “why do queers have to do stuff so half-assed sometimes. Like in the Little Rascals: ‘hey let’s put on a play in the barn, and the goat will pull the curtain?’”

KS Stephens and the debuting cast and crew of Butch Mamas could have easily gotten away with a “let’s put on a show in the barn and the goat will put the curtain” level show. Hell, as a masculinely presenting woman (or um…whatever) I’ll go to anything that has the word “butch” in the title. Play. Movie. Puppet show. Dog show. Whatever. I don’t often see woman who look like me on stage.
